Research engineer, systems and testing

Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Uppsala is looking for a research engineer specialising in systems engineering and testing.

The Space Plasma Physics research programme at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Uppsala invites applications for a full-time position as a scientific systems/test engineer.

At IRF you will be part of an active tight-knit group of engineers and scientists specializing in building scientific instruments for the measurement of plasma densities, electrical fields and plasma temperature in space (for instance Cluster, MMS, Swarm, Cassini, Rosetta, Solar Orbiter, JUICE, Comet Interceptor).

Job description

You will primarily work with development and documentation for the two instruments currently being developed at IRF for the ongoing ESA evaluation of M-class missions. This could for instance include:

• Requirements handling and technical budgets for space instruments.
• Planning of assembly and testing of systems for use in space.
• Information gathering from the different partners of IRF.
• Setting requirements for, and reviewing the documentation of, other teams.

IRF is leading several consortia for the two M7 candidate missions Plasma Observatory and M-MATISSE and you will have an important role as coordinator for different aspects of the instruments, together with the people at IRF currently working within those projects. The projects involve international collaborations, which can involve both domestic and international travels.

Production of technical documentation is an important part of the work, as well as being able to verbally communicate the results of the work.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

• Bachelors degree or higher in engineering with a focus on electronics, mechanics or equivalent.

The following is considered a merit:

• Practical experience of electrical and mechanical tests for demanding environments. 
• Previous experience in working with ESA and ECSS.
• Experience of project management.
• Requirements management in databases.

Due to the extensive international contacts, it is important that you can express yourself very well in both spoken and written English.

The work sets high demands on independence, accuracy, initiative and the ability to solve problems in many technical areas. The ability to collaborate within the group, as well as with external parties, is a requirement. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
