The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) is seeking a guest researcher for the development of automatic determination of ionospheric parameters using data from IRF’s ionosondes.
IRF operates ionosondes located in Uppsala, Lycksele, and Kiruna. The primary task is to develop and test automatic determination of ionospheric parameters using data from these ionosondes with the help of AI-based technology. The work will ideally begin with data from Uppsala, which, due to its lower latitude, represents a relatively undisturbed ionosphere. However, it is also important to be able to process data from the higher latitudes in Lycksele and Kiruna in the auroral zone, where the ionosphere is progressively more complex. The work and results should be documented in a technical report or a manuscript for a scientific publication.
Good general knowledge of space physics and AI-based methods is required. Experience with similar work, especially regarding ionosonde data at high latitudes, is an advantage.
The position is limited to six months and is based at IRF’s headquarters in Kiruna. Salaries are set individually. The start date is in January 2025 or by agreement.
Applications should include a CV, a publication list where the publications most relevant for this work are highlighted, a brief cover letter (one page) outlining research interests and relevant experience, copies of academic degrees, and contact information for two professional references.
