Swedish Institute of Space Physics

Job description

The Swedish Institute of Space Physics is seeking a guest scientist to help us build advanced image analysis software for studies of northern lights and other phenomena in the polar atmosphere. You will be part of a team that is improving the institute's research infrastructure - a toolbox for data analysis and various information services for researchers, authorities and the general public.

Tasks

ALIS_4D is a unique ground-based optical system for studying aurora and other phenomena in the polar atmosphere. It is composed of a grid of remote stations in regular unmanned operation. One of the major scientific objectives of ALIS_4D is to retrieve three-dimensional distributions of the auroral emissions with the aid of tomographic inversion techniques.

As a guest scientist, you will collaborate closely with scientific staff to upgrade and improve existing software and advanced tools for scientific image processing. You will also take part in development of websites for visualization, exploration and management of data sets from IRF's ground-based instruments.

Qualifications

You have a Ph.D. degree in physics, mathematics or an adjacent field that the employer considers relevant. Experience in scientific imaging, visualization, and auroral physics is advantageous.

Existing software for data analysis is written in Python. You need to be able to develop such code. You are able to work in Unix-like environments. Experience with other programming languages (such as Fortran, Matlab/Scilab, C), development tools and methods, version control, etc. is advantageous.

Terms

The position is placed at the IRF head office in Kiruna and is limited to 6 months, with possibility for extension. The start of the position is in the spring 2024 or according to agreement.

Closing date: 2024-04-17

Applications should include a CV, a list of relevant publications, a personal cover letter (max. one page) stating research interests and relevant experience, as well as copies of relevant academic transcripts and contact information for two professional references.
